A SAD DAY FOR GREATER MANCHESTER
by Matt Gallagher on September 18, 2012
Every day, they set off from their police stations to patrol their neighbourhoods, dedicated to helping their fellow citizens, resolving disputes, dispensing friendly advice, dealing with law-breakers, and wearing a distinctive uniform in order to remind all who see them that the rule of law shall prevail.
.
They are ill-equipped to defend themselves from those who are prepared to use deadly force. They accept that they are expected to place themselves in harm’s way and that evil people must be confronted, but their faith in the support and overwhelming goodness of the community they serve drives them to take that risk.
.
Today, we have lost two police officers who were faithfully serving their community. Our hearts must go out to their families and friends, and to their colleagues, who must mark their passing, and then continue to go about their duties with courage and renewed determination.
.
Today’s events are a tragedy for the fallen officers families, and they must be in our thoughts as they come to terms with this dreadful incident.
